What WWII Artifact May Resurface in Annapolis Homes?

DAVIDSONVILLE, ANNAPOLIS, EDGEWATER, ARNOLD AND SEVERNA PARK REAL ESTATE

Among the ideas being floated for projects that make the most of today’s dislodged daily schedules is one that harkens back to old WWII movies—the ones that sometimes showed “Rosie the Riveter” “Loose Lips Sink Ships” posters on the walls. It’s an idea that may or may not gain wide popularity in Annapolis—but if it does, it should banish some of the tedium that goes with being stuck at home. It will also serve a couple of other practical goals. The idea is the revival of the Victory Garden. Victory Gardens became popular as ways that patriotic members of the Greatest Generation could augment their rationed foods and contribute to the war effort at the same time. The fruits and vegetables raised in back- and front yard plots freed farmers to tend to more war-related activities. The idea took off: rooftops, random pots, empty lots, and yards everywhere were converted into what, by the end of the War, produced nearly 40% of U.S. fruits and vegetable harvests! Now, it’s true that more than a few Annapolis homes already feature vegetable gardens. But for homeowners who haven’t previously exercised their green thumbs, proponents point to some other benefits particularly suited to today’s circumstances. In addition to the enjoyment that goes with planning and carrying out any successful garden, there are definite health benefits that result from outdoor activity. There is an undeniable psychological boost as well that goes with watching your garden flourish. There’s also the fact that cutting down on trips to the grocery store minimizes the odds of infection. In future years, long after Annapolis residents have returned to more normal daily routines, most of us will probably have a hard time describing what life was like during the long stretches when we practiced “social distancing.” After all, that’s more of a non-event than anything else. That’s when the saga of a 21st-century Victory Garden is sure to come in handy. It’s precisely the kind of story that grandparents love to tell!
